I am quite nervous about moving to CT, as I really don’t know what I am in for. It is my responsibility to organise my own place to stay etc. I heard that living in Old Saybrook is expensive? What are the living expenses in the states, i.e gas, electricity, water etc……. I will be in the states for ten months. What is the reality that I can live off $10,000 during that period. Most likely will be renting with someone. And any tips?

Flying to the states: Can you fly from LA to CT directly? And what are the best domestic airlines? And how far is Old Saybrook from CT airport, cost of taxi etc?

THANK YOU! whoever can answer all questions will get best answer. One more thing how much will I be looking to pay to fly from LA to CT?

Additional Details

fawdown: the school said we need to find our own accomodation…..the whole schedule isnt 100% confirmed yet from the school.

Is it more expensive if you book it last minute? Yes, rent is probably $500 a month. Are you able to give me any more information.
Thanks

drip: thanks 4 that, from australia can only fly direct to LA. Will keep an eye out on that when looking for rent. Yes definately ill make the school work for there money lol

Lab: oh dear that will be most of my study time there lol ill buy some winter clothes from US, much cheaper I think! Yes, i can’t wait to meet the locals i really like Americans. I will aim for having at least two room mates. It isnt part of a university the course. Where are some really cheap places to eat out?
Maybe ill aim for $12,000 US than.

Lab: I am writing this down. Where are some good stores to buy winter clothes from, and can i find it all year round? I might need to purchase a car, i dont know how easy it is to get around CT. Any american brands you recommend? Prob looking at spending 2-3000 on a car. Yes very exicited about coming to America. I want to go NY!

Answer

$10,000 will be pretty tight in CT unless you have several roommates…I live on about that much a year w a graduate stipend but I live in Ohio which is way cheaper than CT! haha

Most international students room together in apartments if the university does not provide them housing. There will be plenty of other international students in your same predicament who will be looking for roommates. Be careful though, as this can sometimes restrict you from meeting American students if you are around other internationals all the time and do not make an effort to meet the domestic students. Get involved on campus in clubs and sports. Don’t just rely on just making international friends bc it is ‘easier’

Keep in mind that CT gets VERY cold in the winter. If you have not been to a northern country in the winter time you might not realize how bitterly bone-chillingly cold it gets up here. Make sure the apartment you rent has heat included otherwise you will either have outrageous heating bills from Nov-April or you will freeze to death in an effort to save money.

Just some helpful tips. Have fun! America is great!

~~~~~~~~~~
Food in general in America is very cheap with HUGE portions! I studied abroad in the UK and was very sad to find food was expensive, small, and not very good :( You shouldn’t have that problem in the states. Try Buffalo wings (sometimes just called hot wings)! They are amazing and cheap and very spicy. Truly American.
When you get to America, invest in a ski parka and some snow boots (that go above your ankle) Bogs is a good brand and very popular among younger people. There will be days with (no joke) snow up to your hips, if not higher. And so cold that the snot freezes on your nose! Please buy winter clothing when you get there!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sorry. Had to sleep.

There are different stores and chains in different parts of the country and as i am not living in New England i can’t tell you about specific places to shop. Wal-mart and Target, however, are pretty universal in the US. They sell everything you need (except the car) and cheaply. Target usually has better quality products though. For boots and winter gear see if you are near a Dick’s Sporting Goods store. They sell the best brands and bc winter is so brutal, you will need good quality jackets and shoes. Stores start selling winter gear as early as August and carry it through January. HOWEVER do not wait until the first snow storm before shopping for winter clothing. It will be too late and most of the good stuff will be sold out. Get your winter clothes before the first cold in September or October when you’ll have a good variety to choose from.

As far as a car…I don’t know. Will you be living in a large city in CT…or in a small college town? Most American cities have decent public transport (although not nearly as good as Europe’s or Asia’s) so you should be able to get around. If you are in a smaller town you will have to get used to staying put near campus until someone is willing to drive you somewhere. Most American students, however, do not have cars their first and second years and manage just fine. You will probably meet friends w cars and most international student offices at colleges have organized shopping days to get students off campus. If you want to buy a car you can. Usually you can find a used small car for that price (think honda, kia, or toyota). Most states do require the driver to hold car insurance under penalty of law. This will mean an extra bill each month. You will also need to figure out what you are going to do with the car when you leave and even how to drive on the right side of the road! haha

As far as safety, CT is like any-other place in America…there are safe places and not so safe places (usually in the cities). Rule of thumb is just be safe and never walk alone at night, esp when you’re drunk! Don’t start conflicts with people you don’t know and don’t get involved with drugs. If your advisers or other American students tell you not to go somewhere DON’T go there…even if that place is where the ‘good’ clubs and bars are. They know what they are talking about. Overall however, America is a safe country as long as you stay smart. It is not all gun fights and mafia street battles over here as the films portray….just don’t go wandering through the ghetto at night and you’ll be fine.

If you have any other questions you can email me as this question may be closing soon.

So, I’ll be going to a university next year, and I’m thinking of applying to some in the UK. I’m an American, so would that be weird? It’s not unusual for people to leave home in the US, but do people generally stay close to home in the UK?

And, well, this is kind of shallow, but I wouldn’t get treated differently from others there, would I?

I love traveling and going to new places, and I don’t really get homesick, so I don’t think I would have a problem moving that far away, I just wonder if I would actually have fun.

Answer

your fees may be less expensive than the US universities

its quite common for non UK students to attend here, usually up to about 20% on any course, medical courses tend to have a higher non uk proportion.

most people move away from their home to university, although home is usually no more than a 1 – 2 hundred miles away.

british universities still carry some prestige, and it would look good on your CV as soon as you graduate, it may put you ahead of the usual candidates as it would be something out of the ordinary on your CV.

you wouldn’t get treated any differently here, everyone is in the same situation, New term, New people etc.

Im trying to find a lost friend on facebook. The lost friend lives in australia but I always get from the first name onwards USA members, why

Answer

When you’re searching for that person, it says filter by(it has three blank box’s saying location,workplace,school/university).. Well if you know the details of the person you’re trying to find then fill them in, you shouldn’t get anyone from the US showing up unless the person you’re looking for has moved to the US.. Hope that helps.

i mean alhmadillah everyone here has enough money to own a computer, and eat daily, so do you feel ‘stupid’ when you get upset since alot of people in the world are alot worse off than you ie people in Gaza

Answer
yes i do… i always rant about the low standards of the university im attending but then remember that some people hardly have access to primary schools and that makes me feel bad and arrogant.. but on the other hand, aiming and striving for higher gials isnt a bad thing..

i guess that i we should aim high and try our best at anything and regardless if we succeed or not, we thank god for giving us the opportunity to try..

Is it a good idea for me to become a fashion designer and then get my MBA degree? With fashion designing being my undergrad degree will I be able to get into a good business school to do my masters?
Answer
Don’t pay attention to Sophia. MBA programs accept students in any undergraduate field. They prefer students who do not have a business background because they give you the business training but they cannot provide the broad background that managers should have. Most MBA programs prefer students with 2-3 years work experience after the first degree. Some accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. But in those programs you don’t get the benefit of learning from other students who have work experience. A lot of valuable learning takes place through class interaction.

Besides work experience, MBA programs want students with good GPAs and high GMAT scores. Consult the Official MBA Guide. It’s a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria.

I really like Germany, and may consider moving there. I just want to know if it’s extremely difficult. I know in Japan, the only job a foreigner can really get is an an English teacher. Is it as hard for a foreigner to get a job in Germany. I’m not fluent in German, but I’ve been studying the language for a while and know a lot, and by the time I can even consider moving there, I’ll probably be fluent. So what do you think, will it be hard?
Answer

Unless you are a German or other EU citizen your chances to get a work visa are close to 0 reason is every employer hiring you will need to prove there was no German or EU citizen who could do or wanted to have the job without that the employer is not allowed to hire a non EU citizen.

The work visa in any EU country is a lot harder to get than a US Green card.

There are a few possibilities

1) Marry a German citizen which will give you instantly a resident permit to get the work visa will still require you to speak fluent German it does not come automatically if you are married with a German.

2) Apply for a student visa and get some degree from a German university after graduating you are allowed to look during 6 months for a job if you get one you can apply to become a resident.

Really, nothing good comes from Cali. All they bring to the USA is pot heads and 14 year old girls getting abortions. Why don’t we give this shitty state to North Korea or something?

Additional Details
Oh and I left out all the scene retard “expressing themselves” god the bane of our society right there.

Yeah,I actually have been to cali but I was in an apartment full of crack heads,I just didn’t mention that because I know that’s what most of cali is like.Anyway, don’t brag about the quality of movies/music coming out of Hollywood, ever.The **** they are producing these days just proves my point because only someone on some major drugs could even think of backing some of this ****. Second of all, how many people that are actually BORN in cali do you think attend UCLA?I’d guess less than one percent and the fact that a lot of tech companies are there is just a coincidence,there is nothing about cali that is special.They could go anywhere,I’m guessing they are there for the view.Oh and just in my city alone we have blacks, whites, Mexicans, Italians,Jews, Muslims,all types of Asians and a **** load of others,what does that have to do with anything?Cali doesn’t even require an adult to get an abortion, but i guess they get more money that way and no my state is no where near the top.
Answer
have you ever been to california? or you just talking from your ***….CA by itself is the eighth largest economy in the world….sure maybe you guys grow corn but we grow practically everything down here olives, grapes, strawberries, oranges, almonds etc……and because of the geniuses in the silicon valley you have technology (such as the computer you are now using)…..because most of the big tech companies are here in Northern CA….and maybe you should stop watching movies too, and stop listening to popular music…because guess what? Hollywood is in California most movies are generated out of hollywood and so are other forms of entertainment business. California has probably one of the worlds most well known and most prestigious public university system “UC” or University of California system. The most famous colleges are UC Berkeley and UCLA and people come from all over the world to study there. There is also Stanford which is one of the worlds best private universities and the first big university in the west coast of the united states. We probably have the most diverse population unlike all of the other states that have just “black” & “white” cities. We have everything from beaches, to forests, to deserts. And our free thinking mentality is what enables us to get so far ahead, because we can think outside the box. As far as highest teenage abortion rates, i know we’re in the top 10 but your state probably is too. And as a CA resident, the only potsmokers i see are mostly college students and i know every college in the US has those kids. CA is not even on the list of “most pot users”.

Answer

“Best” is probably relative; I found an article on the top three US schools with Masters in naturopathy. The article doesn’t specify what makes them tops, the program or the school itself.

I guess you’ve heard of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (www.ccnm.edu) which features a teaching clinic?

In the US, the most referenced schools when one is looking for naturopathic training:

Bastyr University “internationally recognized as a pioneer in the study of natural healing”
www.bastyr.edu

Clayton College Of Natural Health
www.ccnh.edu

National College of Natural Medicine
www.ncnm.edu

Most if not all provide training in traditional Oriental medicine and may have online courses available.

Probably it would serve you better to frequent a naturopathic/complimentary medicine forum for feedback from those actively involved in the field. If you search Yahoo! Groups, you’ll find one or two such groups.

Central Baptist College

Central Baptist College

Central Baptist College is a four-year, private liberal arts college in Conway, Arkansas. Majors are available within the fields of behavioral science, business, general education, missions, music, religion, and science. Located on a 15-acre (61,000 m2) campus , CBC was founded in 1952 and awards both associate and bachelor’s degrees. Enrollment is 571 students with a 55% to 45% male to female ratio. Students are required to live on campus their freshman year (with exceptions). The academic calendar at Central Baptist College is divided into semesters. Extracurricular activities at CBC include a chorus, intramural sports, student service organizations, and student government organizations. Varsity sports teams compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association. Chapel services are required once weekly for all full-time students.
At the annual meeting of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention in 1891, a special committee was appointed to consider the founding of an educational institution for women. Colonel George W. Bruce was appointed the first Chairman of the Board, and property was soon acquired in Conway. Central College opened in a Baptist church in 1892, while waiting on construction of the Main Building on the 15-acre (61,000 m2) campus. The purpose of the institution was to train women for efficiency in home, church, business, and society.

Central College flourished for fifty-five years until its demise in 1947. Following its closure, the campus lay dormant for a number of years until it was purchased in 1952. The newly formed Baptist Missionary Association of Arkansas purchased the property for $85,000, and Conway Baptist College opened its doors in September 1952 with Dr. D. N. Jackson serving as the first president of the college. The name of the institution was changed in 1962 to its current appellation, Central Baptist College.

CBC has grown from approximately two dozen students to more than 500. The growth rate has significantly increased over the past several years. In 2007, CBC was ranked as the 3rd Fastest Growing College in Arkansas, public or private.[citation needed] The number of faculty has increased from five to approximately fifty full-time and part-time instructors.
